Synonyms: Starch, Corn Starch, Maize Starch
CAS Number: 9005-25-8, Molecular Weight: NA, Chemical Formula: NA, EINECS EC Number: 232-679-6, FEMA: NA,
Corn Starch or Maize Starch is a polymeric carbohydrate consisting of a large number of glucose units joined by glycosidic bonds. This polysaccharide is produced by most green plants as an energy store. It is the most common carbohydrate in human diets and is contained in large amounts in staple foods.
Pure starch is a white, tasteless and odorless powder that is insoluble in cold water or alcohol.
We offer BP USP NF IP grade of Maize Starch or Corn Starch.
Specifications of Corn Starch USP NF Grade:
Corn Starch consists of the starch granules separated from the mature grain of corn [Zea mays L. (Fam. Gramineae)].
Analysis: Examine under a microscope, using a mixture of glycerin and water (1:1) as a mounting agent.
Acceptance criteria: It appears either as angular polyhedral granules of irregular sizes with diameters ranging from 2–23 micro-m, or as rounded or spheroidal granules of irregular sizes with diameters ranging from 25–35 micro-m. The central hilum consists of a distinct cavity or two- to five-rayed cleft, and there are no concentric striations. Between orthogonally oriented polarizing plates or prisms, the starch granules show a distinct black cross intersecting at the hilum.
Sample solution: 20 mg/mL in water
Analysis: Boil for 1 min, and cool.
Acceptance criteria: A thin, cloudy mucilage is formed.
Sample solution: 1 mL of the mucilage obtained in Identification test B
Analysis: Add 0.05 mL of iodine and potassium iodide TS 2 to the Sample solution.
Acceptance criteria: An orange-red to dark blue color is produced, which disappears upon heating.
Residue on Ignition:
Sample: 1.0 g
Acceptance criteria: NMT 0.6%
Limit of Iron:
Acceptance criteria: --- corresponding to a limit of 10 ppm of iron.
Limit of Sulfur Dioxide: To pass the test.
Acceptance criteria: NMT 50 ppm
Limit of Oxidizing Substances:
Acceptance criteria: --- 20 ppm, calculated as H2O2.
Microbial Enumeration Tests and Tests for Specified Microorganisms: The total aerobic microbial count does not exceed 1000 cfu/g; the total combined molds and yeasts count does not exceed 100 cfu/g; and it meets the requirements of the test for the absence of Escherichia coli. Where it is intended for use in preparing Absorbable Dusting Powder, it also meets the requirements of the tests for absence of Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Loss on Drying:
Sample: 1 g
Analysis: Dry the Sample at 130C for 90 min.
Acceptance criteria: NMT 15.0%
Sample solution: Prepare a slurry by weighing 5.0 g of Corn Starch, transferring to a suitable nonmetallic container, and adding 25.0 mL of freshly boiled and cooled water.
Analysis: Agitate continuously at a moderate rate for 1 min. Stop the agitation and allow to stand for 15 min. Determine the pH to the nearest 0.1 unit.
Acceptance criteria: 4.0–7.0
Packaging and Storage: Preserve in well-closed containers. No storage requirements specified.
Labeling: Where Corn Starch is intended for use in preparing Absorbable Dusting Powder, it is so labeled, and the label states that it must be subjected to further processing during the preparation of Absorbable Dusting Powder.
Specifications of Maize Starch BP Ph Eur Grade:
When Starch is specified and the type is not indicated, Maize Starch, Potato Starch, Rice Starch, Wheat Starch or, in tropical countries where these are not available, Tapioca Starch may be supplied or used.
Action and use: Excipient.
Maize starch is obtained from the caryopsis of Zea mays L.
Appearance: Matt, white to slightly yellowish, very fine powder that creaks when pressed between the fingers.
Solubility: Practically insoluble in cold water and in ethanol (96 per cent). The presence of granules with cracks or irregularities on the edge is exceptional.
A. Microscope examination, using a 50 per cent V/V solution of glycerol. It appears as either angular polyhedral granules of irregular sizes with diameters ranging from about 2 micro-m to about 23 micro-m or as rounded or spheroidal granules of irregular sizes with diameters ranging from about 25 micro-m to about 35 micro-m. The central hilum consists of a distinct cavity or 2- to 5-rayed cleft and there are no concentric striations. Between orthogonally orientated polarising plates or prisms, the starch granules show a distinct black cross intersecting at the hilum.
B. Suspend 1 g in 50 mL of water, boil for 1 min and cool. A thin, cloudy mucilage is formed.
C. To 1 mL of the mucilage obtained in identification test B add 0.05 mL of iodine solution. An orange-red to dark blue colour is produced, which disappears on heating.
pH: 4.0 to 7.0.
To 5.0 g add 25.0 mL of carbon dioxide-free water. Agitate continuously at a moderate rate for 60 s. Stop the agitation and allow to stand for 15 min.
Foreign matter: Examined under a microscope using a 50 per cent V/V solution of glycerol, not more than traces of matter other than starch granules are present. No starch grains of any other origin are present.
Oxidising substances: Maximum 20 ppm, calculated as H2O2.
Sulfur dioxide: Maximum 50 ppm.
Iron: Maximum 10 ppm.
Shake 1.5 g with 15 mL of dilute hydrochloric acid. Filter. The filtrate complies with the test.
Loss on drying: Maximum 15.0 per cent, determined on 1.000 g by drying in an oven at 130C for 90 minutes.
Sulfated ash: Maximum 0.6 per cent, determined on 1.0 g.
TAMC: acceptance criterion 103 CFU/g.
TYMC: acceptance criterion 102 CFU/g.
Absence of Escherichia coli.
Absence of Salmonella.
